Wireless BMS Technology for Electric vehicles.
BY AFZAL YOUSAF
Battery management system (BMS) is an important component in electric vehicles as it monitors and controls the battery working. Battery voltage, current, temperature is measured by BMS and converted into sub system of BMS for thermal management, state of health estimation and the estimation of state of charge. BMS effectively contributes for the enhancement of battery performance and life span.
To perform its operations many connections are there from and to BMS, which makes it a bit complex system. But as EV technology is evolving, Wireless Battery Management systems are under development and testing by various companies.
In this article you can read in detail about Wireless BMS Technology developed by Visteon.
Many companies are working on developing wireless BMS Systems and as per reports, Visteon, an American global automotive electronics supplier company announces first production intent wireless battery management technology.
Visteon says General motors will be the first OEM Company to equip its electric vehicles with this new technology. GM will make it a standard in all their planned EV Models powered by ultium batteries. As per reports, Visteon President and CEO, Sachin Lawande said that the wireless BMS Technology eliminates wiring harness found in the traditional battery packs and provide a safe, secure and robust battery system foe EVs. This wireless technology keeps a constant eye on battery health and operation helping manufacturers to enhance passenger safety and improve overall quality and reliability.
The wireless BMS Technology is developed in partnership with GM and other collaborators and provides a platform to deliver high accuracy cell measurement with maximum utilisation of energy per cell for better range. And this technology support safe and sustainable batteries with zero cobalt.
Advantages of Wireless BMS:-
- Reduces weight and more space to allow larger batteries.
- Remove barriers to creative vehicle design.
- Simplifies OEM Manufacturing process.
- Reduces the time to market for new vehicles.
- Increases reliability to minimize running cost.
- Uses faster remote fault finding technology.
- Maximizes battery life to ensure longevity.
- Optimizes energy use per cell and improves range.
