Wireless electricity is becoming a reality. Nikola Tesla's dream finally coming true??

Image
BY    AFZAL YOUSAF Wireless transfer of Electricity is one of the biggest invention by renowned scientist NIKOLA TESLA.  He accomplished his goal by creating a wireless electricity transfer device Tesla coil and showed the world that wireless power transmission is possible. Tesla coil was the first system that could transfer electricity without stringing wires.  Nikola Tesla dreamed to place enormous towers all over the world that could transmit the power wirelessly to any point in the world. Unfortunately this technology was not so practical at that time and investors pulled out from the project and he couldn't complete his high voltage wireless energy transmission system. Almost a century after Nikola Tesla's experiment, An Energy startup named  EMROD is bringing wireless electricity commercialy. EMROD is an energy statrtup company based on New Zealand, looking to transmit the energy without constrained by the wires. Emrod says they wanted to transform...

UK to ban new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 and EV interest in UK Surges.

Image
BY    AFZAL YOUSAF As per latest reports, UK will ban petrol and diesel cars from 2030 as a part of their Green Industry revolution plan. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Britain will ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars by 2030, which is a decade earlier than their previous commitment. Though gasoline and diesel vehicles end their sales in 2030, Hybrid vehicles can be sold till 2035. Previous goal of UK is to electrify the cars on their fleet by 2040, but now the target period have been reduced by ten years. UK Govt. is so optimistic about the new target but automakers have expressed their concerns on the target and stated it as really ambitious. Green plans of UK Govt. includes investment in hydrogen energy, carbon capture technology and ambition to produce enough wind energy to power every home in UK by 2030. Also new generation nuclear power plants included in the plan. Boris Johnson said in a statement that " Although this year has taken a very different p...

Wireless BMS Technology for Electric vehicles.

Image
BY    AFZAL YOUSAF Battery management system (BMS) is an important component in electric vehicles as it monitors and controls the battery working.  Battery voltage, current, temperature is measured by BMS and converted into sub system of BMS for thermal management, state of health estimation and the estimation of state of charge. BMS effectively contributes for the enhancement of battery performance and life span. To perform its operations many connections are there from and to BMS, which makes it a bit complex system. But as EV technology is evolving, Wireless Battery Management systems are under development and testing by various companies. In this article you can read in detail about Wireless BMS Technology developed by Visteon. Many companies are working on developing wireless BMS Systems and as per reports, Visteon , an American global automotive electronics supplier company announces first production intent wireless battery management technology. Visteon say...

Sensorless BLDC Motor technology for Electric vehicles.

Image
BY    AFZAL YOUSAF Brushless DC Motor (BLDC)  is widely used in Electric vehicles like E-bikes, E-rickshaws, small electric loading vehicles etc and is more popular among EV enthusiasts and designers. BLDC is a successor of brushed DC Motor and it uses Hall sensors instead of brushes to control the drive signals. Brushless motors have improved efficiency and reliability than brushed ones.  Also it produce large amount of torque and a wide speed range. But some BLDC Motors do not have sensors. They are called Sensorless BLDC Motors.  In this article, you can read about the technology and working of Sensorless BLDC Motors. In Sensorless BLDC Motor, Instead of using Hall effect sensors to determine position or speed of rotor, we are using the phenomena of Back EMF. This sensorless BLDC Motor is also called sensorless trapezoidal controlled BLDC as voltage waveforms of these have a trapezoidal shape. In this sensorless technology, Back EMF is used to determin...

Why electric vehicles are expensive. Factors affecting EV Cost and Future Developments.

Image
BY    AFZAL YOUSAF As every electric vehicle enthusiasts and customers know, main hurdle for the electric vehicles is the cost of the vehicle and driving range. Even though maintenance and running cost of EVs are very low compared to IC Engine vehicles, initial buying cost of EVs are always a a big drawback in customer point of view than range. In this article you can read about the factors that affect EVs cost and other hurdles. In Electric vehicle's one third of the cost is for the battery. Tesla CEO Elon musk said in Battery day event, to provide electric vehicle for reduced price, there has to be a drastic change in battery manufacturing and technology of the batteries. Innovations and in-house manufacturing will help to reduce the battery cost. Why Electric vehicles are expensive?? Electric vehicles are expensive because of the components and technologies used in them. Battery is the source of energy and it accounts for 30-40% of the total EV cost. This batteries ...
